Newgate MTS Line 1 is a low capacity light rail line serving Newgate operated by MTS (Mass Transit System) running in a north south direction starting at Parkway Station in the north and Windy Hill in the south. It is the first rail line built to serve Newgate. It is the second longest line in Newgate, at 800m long.

Constructed initially as part of a downtown light rail, it was soon decided that it would serve the entire city as a suburban line, connecting new towns such as Parkway and Windy Hill to the city centre. Both lines 1 and 2 use the same rolling stock and signalling equipment and have been upgraded entirely. It is semi automatic, however.

History

The first segments of Line 1 would be a 100m viaduct from south square to anglon, Newgate's only developed new town at the time. The segment was first opened in 1994, by Newgate's transport minister at the time. The next extension was another 150m viaduct from Anglon to Parkway, continuing to serve more of Newgate's new towns as they developed.

Subsequent extensions

In 2003, the Windy Hill extension opened to the public. it was a 400m viaduct that cut through the CBD.

Improvement works

Expansion of station platforms

The standard platforms were smaller than they were now. In 2002, with the construction of Windy Hill Station and rising demand for the line, the expansion of station platforms was approved by the ministry of transport.

Retrofitting of lifts

The original stations opened in 1994 originally did not have lifts. In 1999, the ministry of transport authorised the retrofitting on lifts in the stations built in the original segments.
